The Tibetan Art of Healing
Published in Paperback by Chronicle Books (November, 1997)
Authors: Ian A. Baker, Romio Shrestha, and Dalai Lama
Average review score:

a book for everyone
the illustrations in this book give the western reader a spectacular glimpse at some of the visual spendor of Tibet. the actual writing only gives a basic analysis of tibetan medicine, but this book is a must have for both well-studied practicioners and people with a passing interest.

Brave Health
Age, behavior, diet, personality, physical environment, and season all have a part in health: all disease is caused by jarring the flow between body and world and by not understanding that a self-identity is not fixed or lasting. Good health balances diet, lifestyle, and mental and seasonal conditions. A good diet is the particular basis of all Tibetan medical treatment, with the emphasis on butter, milk, roasted barley flour, and tea. Tibetan medicine wants health kept or restored by internally balancing body and mind: aging shows up with mental and physical stress, and we are poisoned by attachment, aversion, dullness, envy and pride. However, a good doctor has the advantage when strong on compassion, medical understanding, and wisdom: THE TIBETAN ART OF HEALING draws heavily on being sensitive to internal energy flow and knowing plants. Ian Baker's book of 79 medical paintings by Nepalese artist Romio Shrestha backtracks to the Blue Beryl commentary on Tibetan Buddhist health, which is also a concern of John F. Avedon's equally impressive BUDDHA'S ART OF HEALING. I find it helpful to have two other books by the same author: CELESTIAL GALLERY, with the same illustrator, and THE DALAI LAMA'S SECRET TEMPLE, with all the special meditative artwork.

Toward a New Psychology of Women
Published in Paperback by Beacon Press (April, 1987)
Author: Jean Baker Miller
Average review score:

a timeless classic about dominant/subordinate relationships
This small and important book gives a timeless and cogent description of the dynamics between dominants and subordinates. Though the examples are specific to the relationships between men and women, the model offered stands up in an examination of dominant/subordinate relationships between any two groups or individuals. I discovered my own relationship with my sister (and vestiges of the dominant/subordinate in our relationship continue well into our adulthood). Continuously in print since 1976, Miller's little book is destined to remain in print as a classic, yet with a tiny bit of promotion from the publisher, it could easily become a current bestseller.

Allowed more insights into myself than any other book.
Jean Baker Miller has done a magnificient job of illustrating major developmental issues for men and women. The title is deceiving, because it doesn't express the power and depth of her thinking as it applies to both genders.

A major contribution, by the author, is her recognition of the roles of dominants and subordinates. This phenomenon appears in almost all aspects of our lives. People in either role learn, the important concept is to understand what they learn. Jean Baker Miller focused on the role of men and women as they fulfill this dominant, subordinate relationship and the learning that stems from these roles.

When I read her book it was like I was standing in front of a full-length mirror that reflected a picture of my emotional state. I was able to see that my emotional state was half empty. My feminine qualities had been forced from my being, and I was unhappily overrun by my masculine self. Her book allowed me a map from which to start to reintegrate the feminine into my being. It allowed me to cry for the isolation of my masculine self and welcome the strength of my feminine. The reflections I received helped me rearrange my values to allow myself to be both empathetic and strong. In one sense it allowed me to understand my own intelligence. I defined my intelligence as the energy created by the unbroken path between my heart and mind. Intelligence is the product of this synergistic connection. When this connection is blocked or broken my intelligence is not in force.

My work with leaders in organizations is strongly influenced by the discoveries I made will reading this book. I hope you take the time to reflect on these difficult, but crucial issues.

U.S. Aircraft Carriers: An Illustrated Design History
Published in Hardcover by United States Naval Inst. (April, 1983)
Authors: Norman Friedman and A. D., III Baker
Average review score:

Superbly Detailed and Fascinating
This volume, one of many in Norman Friedman's naval design histories, is amazingly thorough in its coverage of U.S. aircraft carrier design from the 1930s-era Saratoga and Lexington through the nuclear-powered Nimitz-class, as well as the offshoot amphibious assault carriers.

The book is filled with design schematics, ships' specifications and more esoteric naval information than you could possibly absorb in a lifetime. The rich wealth of information is the consistent strength of this series that makes it a bit overwhelming for the casual reader looking for a narrative history of U.S. carrier.

The emphaisis here is on ship design, its impact on operations and little else. If there is any shortcoming to be found within the book, it is that it is rather old, having been last updated in 1983, when the Nimitz class was just hitting its stride and long before the design innovations fueled by the Navy's growth in the waning years of the Cold War.

Aircraft Carriers
This is an excellent book for those who want technical information about the US Navy Aircraft Carriers. The book covers detail information about the design, construction, and modifications of all of the classes of US carriers built since the beginning of carrier aviation. In addition, the book covers other designs the US Navy thought about but never bothered to build. This book is not for the novice but for those who need detail technical information, this is the book to get.

The Unauthorized Nascar Fan Guide '99
Published in Paperback by Visible Ink Pr (March, 1999)
Authors: Bill Fleishman, Al Pearce, and Buddy Baker
Average review score:

Any stat you're looking for!
This book is a must have for any Nascar fan, particularly if you're a number nut like me. The top 50 in points for every season since '49, race winners also since '49 and every spot in every race since '72. That's just for starters. Too much to write here. Great book, I'll be ordering the '00 edition as well.

A must-have book for any NASCAR fan
The Unauthorized NASCAR Fan Guide '99 is a great resource for any NASCAR fan. This book contains enough information and statistics to keep even the die-hard fans happy. The history of NASCAR is separated into logical periods, and it's a real joy to read about how the crowds grew, corporate America joined, and the drivers slowly turned from moonshine runners to product spokesmen.

If you're a long-time fan, this book will provide you with more than enough information to challenge anyone to a NASCAR trivia bet. If you're a new fan of stock car racing, chapter 21, How to Watch a NASCAR Race, will be well worth the price of the book.

The Unauthorized NASCAR Fan Guide '99 is a must-have book for any NASCAR fan. For less than twenty bucks, this book should be on every fan's bookshelf.

Visions of Heaven
Published in Paperback by Whitaker House (May, 1996)
Author: H. A. Baker
Average review score:

Visions of Heaven
Visions by Chinese children in a pre-WWII orphanage agree with Revelations and other prophesy about the end of the church age. Compelling witness as to the final choice for all souls.

Overwhelming-guarenteed to change your outlook on life.
This book ruined my vacation. Here I was, in a grim effort to relax at the beach, reading a book handed to me the moment before leaving home. But oh, how eye-opening! Reading of the miraculous touch received by so many Chinese youths in the early 1900s, and learning what they saw and understood of the truth was riveting. It changed my perspective, and certainly made me think again about the vanity of many of my life pursuits. Highly recommended! But be sure to read to the end; much of the best reading is in the last few chapters.

Wallace & Gromit in the Wrong Trousers
Published in Paperback by Bantam Doubleday Dell Pub (Juv (November, 1996)
Authors: Graham Marks, Nick Park, and Bob Baker
Average review score:

Awesome.
Wallace and Gromit rock! They are the stars of some of the cleverest animation around. Great story to go with the film.

very humorous and witty
diabolically entertaining and cleverly humorous--this is my favorite "Wallace and Gromit". the penguin adds the much needed tension that seperates the mind set of the crafty dog Gromit from his simpleton owner, Wallace. it is an enjoyable narrative for all ages.

Walter the Baker
Published in Paperback by Aladdin Library (01 April, 1998)
Author: Eric Carle
Average review score:

My son loves it!
I now have to read Walter the Baker nearly every night, and he talks about the book frequently while we're on trips. There's a lot going on in the story, but not too much for a toddler to handle (he's 2-1/2). Definitely entertaining, and Eric Carle never seems to miss with the kids.

I rarely say it, however to me Walter Jr. seemed like one...
of the most fascinating tales I've read! Have you ever been in a disaster, so great you didn't know what to do? If so Walter Jr. had the same problem after upsetting the Duke and Ducthess of his home town. Walter, a baker, made delicious sweet rolls for the Duke and Ducthess of his home town. However one day Walter's cat tipped over a can of milk. Walter witnessed the incident and became desperate. "What shall I do?," he thought. He had no fresh milk and without that his rolls tasted awful! Thinking that the Duke and Ducthess wouldn't notice, Walter substituted the milk with water. As soon as the Duke and Ducthess tasted the inferior rolls they called Walter over. The Duke almost banished Walter but quickly thought about how much he'd miss the sweet rolls. He considered giving Walter the ultimate challenge, invent a roll which the rising sun can shine through three times, use one piece of dough, and it must taste good. What will Walter do and what will he make? Read this spectacular book to find out how and what Walter creates!
